Ellender Bookout was born to John Bookout and Sally Vaughn in Wayne County, Kentucky. She married Henry Bennett and together they began raising a family in Frentress County, Tennessee. By 1850 they had moved to southwest Missouri, and five years later they became early settlers in Kansas Territory in what would become Allen County. A strong Union family, two sons fought in the Civil War. Afterward Ellender and Henry went back to Missouri, residing in Neosho in 1870. Later they moved further east to Webster County.
