One of nine children. Enlisted as a private in the Confederate infantry in Montgomery, Ala. He was one of the 16 men of the original company of 116 who survived to surrender with Robert E Lee at the McLean House in Virginia. He moved to Atlanta in 1866 and entered into business with his brother Augustus, selling fertilizer. He ran for city council in 1897 and won by one vote. Both he and his wife are buried in the Marsh Mausoleum.
