Fred Julius Albrecht was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Columbia to Julius and Ruth (Morris) Albrecht. He attended school at Daly Corners School.
On Oct. 30, 1940, he married Grace Borden in Britton. They made their home on a farm near Columbia until 1975, when they moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he worked as a landscaper and custodial work. On Dec. 1, 1993, they moved to Groton to be close to their family.
Fred was a member of the United Church of Christ in Columbia, where he served on all boards. He was instrumental in moving the church to the present site. He helped build the Columbia Auditorium, Masonic Temple and the Columbia Blacksmith Shop. He worked with the CCC in Hot Springs and Custer and was involved in the first elevator and dig out for Wind Cave. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge for 60 years, Columbia Lodge No. 43 and Sunrise Lodge 211, 50-year member of Scottish Rites, Yelduz Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a past member of the Daly Corner school board, and was a member of Farmers Union and National Farmers.
Fred was an avid fisherman and loved hunting and playing cards. He really enjoyed his annual fishing trips to Canada. He loved telling stories. He loved his family and enjoyed his children's events.
Grateful for having shared Fred's life are his wife, Grace Albrecht, of Groton; children: Beverly (Darrel) Sombke of Groton, Lavonne (Marshall) Gesling of Harrisburg, Wilbur (Judy) Albrecht of Columbia and Leland (Vickie) Albrecht of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; grandchildren: Brad (Kristie) Sombke, Brenda (Brad) Waage, Todd (Tracie) Gesling, Chris (Michele) Gesling, Jon (Casey) Gesling, Mara (Kerry) Hart, Cherie (Brad) Reuer, Shad (Darcy) Albrecht, Carrie (Andy) Lauersdorf and Jane (Gary Mantolesky) Albrecht; great-grandchildren: Kayla, Elise, Tanner, Anthony, Jake, Riley, Grace, Avery, Alyshia, Jordan, Julia, Justin, Travis, Jamie, Cheyann, Camyjo, Marqelle, Jade, Maycee, Jeric, Braeden and Ava; foster son, James Grace; foster grandchildren: Jodee (Justin), Bobbie (Chris), Brandi (Keith) and Amanda (Paul); foster great-grandchildren: Grace, Justice, Jackson, Julie, Taylor, Tessa, Kennedy, Zoey and Aiden; sister, Delores Berreth of Aberdeen; sister-in-laws: Elsie Albrecht and Mary Albrecht, both of Aberdeen, and Betty (Orville) Nundahl of Oakes, N.D.; and brother-in-law, James Fuerest of Lemmon.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Ruth Albrecht; son, Lester; grandchildren: Paul, Barry and Jenifer Sombke; brothers: Wayne, Walter, Merle and Elmer; and sisters: Bernis Smith and Esther Jeschke.
When the Lord called Fred home, he left a gift of memories in exchange. Thank you Fred for the treasured memories. May God bless your soul.
