Dr. Charles E. Bender Jr. Charlie passed away on Saturday November 15, 2014. He was 1 week shy of his 87th birthday. He died at home with his wife Wanda.

Charlie served in the Army Air Corp (Air Force) from 1946- 1949. He was a charter member of the United States Air Force. He attended College at Syracuse University, and State University of New York College of Medicine. He graduated Alpha Omega Alpha, honor society with his M.D. in 1957. He a was general practitioner in Lafayette, NY as well as the prison doctor and the official medical examiner for New York State boxing and wrestling commissions. His office was attached to his home so he was available all the time. Later moving to Florida as an Instructor in Radiology and Associate Professor at the University of Florida from 1964-1968, he helped start the Nuclear Medicine Tech program in Gainesville. Charlie became the Chief Radiologist at Beaches Hospital in February of 1968 where he served the community for over 30 years. He was a member of Kiwanis where he served as president. He was on the board of Directors for the local American Cancer Society , worked with Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry. He was an avid hunter and passionate about saltwater fishing. He was a Life member of the NRA. Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda, his 3 children Vivian Bender-Walker ( Kent Walker, Anatasia, and Elizaveta) of Gainesville, Charlie Bender III ( Beth) of Jacksonville , & James Bender (Susan, Jake, and Cole) of Orlando. A service to celebrate Dr. Bender s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach with burial to follow in H. Warren Smith Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
