Charity Pinder was the third child of Sarah Elizabeth Russell and John Pinder. Her sister Elizabeth died as a child so Charity was raised with only her older sister Emma and their younger sister Amelia. Her father was a carpenter, who was working in Key West in 1860, but had moved his family to Indian Key by 1870, where they were one of nine families living on the tiny 10 plus acre island. That is where Charity met the man she would marry and share the rest of her life with, James Franklin Bethel. He was living with his parents on the island, but he was destined to be a ships carpenter and there were better opportunities other places. Soon after the young couple was married, they moved to Manatee County, Florida where Frank's sister lived. By 1885, Frank and Charity were living on Fleming Street in Key West and raising four young sons: Harry, Roland, Ralph, and James. Over the next 18 years, they moved back to the west coast of Florida and would have five more children: Harlan, Emma, Mary, Lottie, and John. By 1900, the family had settled in Tampa, 158 W. 10th Avenue, Frank was working as a ship carpenter, and five of their six children were living at home with them. In 1920, Frank and Charity lived alone on Russell Street, but in 1930, they were living at 2912 Hawthorn and their youngest son, John, was living with them, as was his sister Emma, her Canadian husband George St Laurent, and their daughter Emma Marie St Laurent. George and Emma were trapeze artists. Their daughter Emma Marie was born in Australia while they were on tour. By 1835, Frank and Charity's son John was still living at home with them and doing farm labor. Frank died in October 28, 1939, at the age of 90. After Frank died, Charity lived five more years, dying at the age of 82. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Tampa, where they had buried their 15 year old son Ralph.
