He married Elizabeth Naugle on December 25, 1860. Their first of seven children was born in 1862. They named her Nancy Jane after two of Elizabeth's sisters. In 1863, Robert and Elizabeth sold their farm in Ohio and moved west to Illinois. They set out on the 422 mile trip on February 19, 1863. They settled on a farm in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois where they would spend the next nine years and would have four more children: Lavinia, in 1865; Silas D. on October 12, 1866; Charlotte in 1870; and Clara, in 1871.

On October 7, 1872, the Andersons left Illinois on a 172 mile trip to Missouri. They settled on a farm near Campbell (Dunklin County), where they would remain the rest of their lives. They had two more children after arriving in Missouri: Leta Bell, born March 10, 1874; and Enslow, born in 1878.

Their oldest daughter, Nancy Jane, married Preston Colwell Wimberley on November 21, 1880, at home. Clara married William R. Vincent on April 8, 1893 in Kennett, Missouri. By 1900, five of the Anderson children had died, leaving only Silas and Leta Bell. In 1901, Robert died, widowing his wife of 40 years. He was survived by his wife Elizabeth, his son Silas, and his daughter Leta Bell.
