TRAVERSE CITY — The Rev. Philip Arnold Douglass, 67, was welcomed home under the Lord's care Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at his home in Traverse City.

Philip was born Sept. 7, 1942, to the late Rowland and Alta Ruth (Aston) Douglass in Los Angeles.

Philip was a graduate from Birmingham High School in VanNuys, Calif., before finding his way to Ft. Wayne, Ind., to attend college. He graduated from Ft. Wayne Bible College in 1965, and began his own family as he entered into marriage with the former Carolyn Dreher in June of 1965. In 1968, Philip was ordained into ministry in Fresno, Calif., and eventually became the founder of Peninsula Bible Church and Noah's Ark Day Care Center in Traverse City. Philip was also employed with the Traverse Bay Intermediate School District, where over the course of 17 years he worked as a job coach for children with special needs. Many of those children Philip lovingly worked with remember "Mr. D." even years after graduating.

Philip loved his Church and drew strength and joy from a family filled with grandchildren, for whom he deeply cared. Philip enjoyed music and could often be found reading or taking in the beauty of the area around the Grand Traverse bays.

Philip is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Carolyn J. Douglass of Traverse City; three sons, Chad P. (Linda) Douglass of South Bend, Ind., Eric P. (Carrie) Douglass, and Ryan J. (Amy) Douglass, both of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Gabriel, Olivia, Jackson, Brady, Charles, Carson and Foster; his sister, Cassandra Douglass; his church family, as well as many other loving family members and friends.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. this evening, Oct. 20, at the church Rev. Douglass founded, Peninsula Bible Church.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, also at the church, located at 430 Fair St., Traverse City, with Pastor Gregory Clark officiating. Graveside committal services will be held in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Peninsula Bible Church.
