A reading of this section of Greenwood Cemetery, completed in 1988, recorded the following inscription on Bertie's marker:
"Bertie E. / son of / Richard M. & Orpha Ackerman / Died April 2?, 1864 / AE 3 yrs. 2 m. 19's"
If this reading is correct, it appears that Bertie was born in February 1861. It also appears that Richard and Orpha's next child, George H, was born on Nov 12, 1861, nine months after the date of birth calculated for Bertie. Although not impossible, it seems unlikely that Orpha had two children so close together. It is possible either that the inscription, already worn, was read incorrectly, or it was read correctly and Orpha had a very busy year.
Bertie appears in the 1865 New York State census, which suggests he died after mid-1865, rather than in the spring of 1864.
