Alton grew up in Columbia Township, rural Fosston, MN and attended the Pine Hill Country School. He was a dairy and beef farmer and a lifelong resident of Columbia Township. He was united in marriage to Mercedes (Larson) Olson on Dec 2, 1972 at Poplar Lake Church near Fosston. After their marriage, they continued to reside and farm on the home farm.
Alton was a member of Poplar Lake Lutheran Church where he was active in service on the church council. He was the current Fire Warden for Columbia Township, a position he held for over 30 years and was a long-life member of the Columbia Township Board. He also served on the Ag Service Board in Fosston for many years.
