Mississippi was the second southern state to declare secession from the Union on January 9, 1861. The state joined with six other southern states to form the Confederacy a month later. Mississippi's location along the lengthy Mississippi River made it strategically important to both the North and South; dozens of battles were fought in the state as armies repeatedly clashed near key towns and cities including Vicksburg.

Daniel "Dan" Alverson served the Confederacy in Company H of the Mississippi 21st Infantry Regiment. Vicksburg was the site of the Battle of Vicksburg, an important battle in which the Union forces gained control of the entire Mississippi River. The eventual capture of Vicksburg was a turning point in the Civil War.

After the Civil War, Daniel married Georgeann Humphreys and established a home in Bolivar County, Mississippi.
