My special uncle.
My uncle Erich was born in Altenwalde (Schlesia), nowadays Poland. He grew up in a humble home. In the course of WWII, an eye illness was not discovered and treated accordingly, which lead to his losing his eyesight as a young man. In a home for the blind, my uncle learned the profession of a brush and broom maker. Uncle Erich decided to stay there, as he had work in this situation of assisted accomodation that still assured his independence.
We often went to see him, while he spent public holidays and feasts with the family. Uncle Erich had a great talent, and that was his ability to play the mouth organ beautifully. Every now and then he sang old songs, ‚drumming' the beats by tipping his fingers onto the table. And we were often amazed when he read to us stories from his 'books with the holes'.
Erich, we think of you very often. You have taught us that one can make everythig come true if only one firmly believes in it.
