The tomb was erected in memory of his parents by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork, in 1629. (Richard's fifth son was the scientist and philosopher Robert Boyle, who formulated 'Boyle's Law'.) Richard is the kneeling figure at the head, facing east; the oldest brother, John, Bishop of Cork is shown kneeling at the feet of his parents, barely visible in the photos, because of the side of the sanctuary enclosure. The smaller figures at the front represent the three surviving children: Elizabeth wife of Piers Power, Mary, wife of Sir Richard Smyth, and between them Hugh, the third son, killed at war abroad.
