The 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot ('The Young Buffs') was an infantry regiment of the British Army formed in 1702 and amalgamated into The East Surrey Regiment in 1881.
The Regiment received the following Battle Honours for theFirst Sikh Wars:
Moodkee (18 December 1845: awarded 1847)
Ferozeshah (21 December 1845: awarded 1847)
Aliwal (28 January 1846: awarded 1847)
Sobraon (10 February 1846: awarded 1849)

Inscription

In memory of / Colonel Bolton, C.B. / and Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria / who commanded the 31st Regt. of Infantry,
Captain Willes, and Lieuts. Hart and Brenchley, / all of whom fell mortally wounded at the Battle of Moodkee, / on the 18th of December 1845;
Major Baldwin, Lieut. Pollard, and Lieut. & Adjt. Bernard / killed at the Battle of Ferozeshah, / on the 21st and 22nd of December 1845;
Ensigns Tritton and Jones, / who were killed while carrying the Colours of the Regiment / at the Battle of Sobraon, / on the 10th of February 1846
Also to the memory of / the Non-Commissioned Officers and Private Soldiers of the Regiment, / numbering two hundred and three, / who fell in the Battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Budhowal / (on the 21st of January 1846) / Aliwal (on the 28th of January 1846) and Sobraon; / which last victory concluded the conquest of the British over the Sikhs, / in the Campaign of the Sutlej.
This monument / is dedicated by the Officers of the 31st Regiment, / their companions in arms.
