I have been able to verify Matilda as his mother.
The New York Times reported on 21 Nov. 1895. On the 20th of Nov. a fire destroyed part of the block containing the Way Hardware Company, the United States Bank and the Dental Office of Dr. H.C. Bullock. The fire completely gutted the two upper stories. Total losses were estimated at $30,000, but they were insured.
Dr. Bullock had been on Main Street all of his years of practice according to city directories and Beecher and Polk dental directories.
1869 - 1876 at 844 Main Street
1877 - 1895 at 346 Main Street when the fire occurred
1902 - 1910 at 868 Main Street
Dr. Bullock was listed in all of the Polk directories (1893-1910) with no educational information meaning he was either self taught or served a preceptorship under a practicing dentist.
"Doctor" Bullock since he was not formally educated in dentistry did not hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree but many practitioners of dentistry were "grandfathered" and allowed to continue practicing during the early years of dentistry's establishment as a profession.
The DDS degree is the one awarded by the majority of dental schools in the United States. The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was established in 1840 and was THE FIRST DENTAL SCHOOL IN THE WORLD and thus the first to grant the DDS degree. The DMD degree was first used in 1867 when Harvard established the first university affiliated dental school. The reason this degree is DMD rather than DDM is that it stands for the Latin "Dentariae Medicinae Doctor."
