The following obituary is provided for Dr. Curtis:

Cotuit --David M. Curtis, M.D., former chief of staff at Cape Cod Hospital, died May 12, 2002. He was the husband of June (Nickerson) Curtis.

Born in Marlborough on April 23, 1915, Dr. Curtis was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University and Tufts Medical School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a surgeon. He practiced general surgery for 35 years, 30 at Cape Cod Hospital, where he was chief of staff from 1968 to 1969, before retiring in 1980.

Dr. Curtis served on the board of trustees of the Barnstable County Hospital, where he was also a surgical consultant. He was a liaison between Cape Cod Hospital and the local chapter of the Red Cross, and a member of their "three gallon club."

A service spokesman for the American Cancer Society, Dr. Curtis was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Barnstable District Medical Society.

For 49 years, he was a resident of Osterville, where he served as a director of the historical society and was a member of the men's club. He had lived in Cotuit for the last five years.

Dr. Curtis was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed photography, travel and the Red Sox. He was devoted to his wife and his children and was particularly involved with the lives of his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Joan Carleton of South Dennis; three sons: David Curtis, Jr. of Cotuit, Peter Curtis of Loveland, Colorado and Dr. James Curtis of Camden, Maine; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in the United Methodist Church of Osterville.
