Lieutenant John Curtis served as sergeant under Captain Benjamin Richardson at the battle & capture of Dorchester Heights in March of 1776. He rose to the rank of lieutenant during the course of the Revolutionary War. John was married to Phebe Keith and later to her niece Lydia Keith, who bore him a total of 18 children. His granite monument, which includes his father's family, appears to have been placed around 1900 by a grandson, Dr. Lucian W. Curtis, undoubtedly to replace badly damaged or missing original tombstones.
