John E. Curtis started the family shoe business soon after settling in Marlborough, prior to the Civil War. In 1853 he married Jane M. Putnam of Grafton and they had 8 children of whom 6 lived to adulthood, Anna L., Arthur P., Charles W., Mary E., Jennie L. and Lillian F. For many years he held the post of deacon of the First Church Congregational in Marlborough. In 1873 he bought the old "Loring" property on Main Street below the church, which was his last residence.
