The daughter of American missionaries who were on the field when they learned of her death, Misty was killed by a drunk driver as she pulled out of a driveway onto a dark road after attending a birthday party. The offending driver, whose blood alcohol tested three times the legal limit, was speeding (68 in a 40) with his headlights off.

A passenger, eighteen-year-old Cynthia Douglas, was also killed.

Three other passengers -- Heidi McLaughlin, Jamie Taylor, and Amy Colopy -- were seriously injured but their lives were spared.

All five girls were students at Crown College of the Bible in Powell (Knoxville), Tennessee.
