James Albert "P-Nut" Cromer was one of the owners of Cromer's P-nuts in Columbia, "Guaranteed Worst In Town." He died at his pond in Lexington doing one of the things he loved most: fishing. He was 81.
He was a son of Julian Daniel and Luritha Buff Cromer and was predeceased by his wife, Helen Price Cromer.
He was known far and wide for his magic tricks and entertainment of others. He lived life to the fullest and truly the song "I Did it My Way" described him perfectly.
His motto was "Play as hard as you work."
P-Nut was a pilot in the Army Air Corps and an instructor in the Palmetto School of Aeronautics. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, South Carolina Foxhunters Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
He was an Explorer Scout Leader in his younger years and taught many young men how to play "donkey softball" and to water ski. Real estate became his main interest in the later part of his life.
He is survived by his four daughters and their husbands: Carolette and Hal Turner, Ginger and Tom Sox, Jan and Burns Corley, and Susan and Steve Shumpert; his eight grandchildren: Rob (Alice) and Chris (Heather) Turner, Jenny (Chris) Ellisor and Adam Corley, Abby and Jason Sox, and Katie and Anna Shumpert; and two great-granddaughters: Lily and Cecile Turner.
Also on hand to mourn P-Nut's passing were his devoted friend, Harold Hite; his longtime caretaker, Daisy Sutton; and his loyal black labs, Tye and Skeeter.
