John was the fourth of eleven children born to John Arts and Margaret Yopp. He never married. He was a life-long carpenter who retired as a building construction contractor and was prominent in the Paducah building community. John died of arteriosclerotic heart disease at his home, 1936 Clark Street, at the age of 86.
He was known for many years as "Uncle Johnny".
