Knight of West Ayton and Brompton, Yorkshire, Sheriff of Yorkshire, Justice of East Riding.

Son and heir of Sir Gilbert de Aton, 1st Lord Aton.

Husband of Isabel de Percy, daughter of Henry de Percy and Idoine Clifford Percy. They married before Jan 1327 and had three daughters:
* Anastasia, wife of Sir Edward St John
* Katherine, wife of Sir Ralph de Evere
* Elizabeth, wife of Sir John Conier

Grandfather of Margaret Saint John Bromflete.

William was summoned to Parliament Jan 1371 as Willelmo de Aton, and gave evidence in the Scrope-Grosvenor trial (dispute ever which family had rights to a shield.)

Isabel died before 25 May 1368.

William's death of August 1387 is confirmed by an inquisition on 01 April 1388 that states he "died in seisin on Tuesday after St. Laurence, 11 Richard II [13 August 1387]." All three of his daughters and their husbands are mentioned.
