ALESSIO, MARDELL RUBY 1917 to 2010

Mardell "Mardy" Alessio passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes on June 28, 2010.

Mrs. Alessio was born on September 25, 1917 in Metamora, Illinois and moved to San Diego with her parents Peter and Elizabeth Steider in 1934. While working at the U.S. Grant Hotel florist shop in downtown San Diego, she met a gregarious young man named Angelo Alessio whom she married in 1940. As Angelo and his brothers became prominent San Diego businessmen in the late 1950's, Mardy's calm and dignified nature complimented their endeavors. However, shy by nature, Mrs. Alessio was most comfortable at home raising her three children. As they grew up and had their own children, her favorite times were spending the holidays with the extended family, making large and elaborate meals for everyone as she was a terrific cook. Mardy was as comfortable in heels, hats and gloves at social events as she was in pants and flats at home. An adventurous woman, she traveled with her husband on several safaris and trekked through cities in Egypt, Algeria, Israel, Russia, Iran and South Africa. Mardell and Angelo also spent many years in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they built a second home. Her ability to always remain calm, cool and collected served her well throughout her travels, especially when she took trips with her children and later her grandchildren. In addition to her wonderful sense of humor, her family will always remember her endearing smile and her wisdom of life.

Mrs. Alessio was preceded in death by her brother William Steider and her beloved husband, Angelo Alessio.

She is survived by her daughter Rosalie (Bill) O'Brien, sons Lawrence (Linda) Alessio and Steven (Kristine) Alessio as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Private services were held on July 3, 2010. Memorial gifts may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego (www.pdasd.org).
