Daniel Lester Ashton was a native of Colorado, being born to Charles Edwin Ashton (1857-1943) and Emma Rosella Rice Ashton (1863-1951) while the family was living at Atwood, Logan County, Colorado, when he was born on Oct 2nd, 1898. Daniel was the youngest of seven children born to Charles, a farmer all of his days, who moved from Illinois to Kansas, which is where he and Emma married on Mar 31, 1881. Their first two children, Effie Adella (b.Feb 6, 1882) and Nora Clyde (b.Jul 23, 1884) were born in Kansas. The family had moved to Colorado by the time Hazel Kirk was born on Feb 6, 1888. They continued to live on a farm in Colorado when their last four children, John Paul (b.Jul 30, 1890), Lucy Pauline (b.Nov 25, 1893), Charles Rice (b.Aug 15, 1896) and Daniel Lester were born. In 1900, when the census was taken, the family was living at Sterling, Logan Co., Colorado in the Merino district when the enumerator came to call on June 20, 1900. 1910 found them living in St.John, Whitman County, Washington, in the same area as their married daughter, Effie Adella, who had married Guy Arthur Silvis, who was also a Farmer. Effie and Guy went on to have four children of their own. Daniel's parents purchased a farm in the area which they sold prior to 1920; they relocated to Oregon where many members of the Ashtons were settling. In Jan 1920 Daniel and Emma owned a farm in Tangent, South of Albany, in Linn County of Oregon. Only four children remained at home - daughters Nora and Hazel, and sons Charles and Daniel Lester, who performed farm labor, per the census. Daniel Lester Ashton married Daisy Cable Slate in c1922. Daisy was a native Oregonian who had been to college, as had Daniel. Because of his college education, Daniel was hired as a Road Construction Contractor and the couple bought a home of their own at 887 2nd Street, Lebanon, Linn Co., Oregon. The home was valued at $5,000 when the 1930 Census was taken on Apr 7th, and the couple had not only a radio set, but also two young children, Daniel Phillip, age 6, and Hallie Louise, age 3 yrs, 3 months. Daisy's niece, Dorothy M. Slate, age 17, performed housework while living with her aunt, uncle and cousins. Daniel and Daisy remained in their home on 2nd Street, and, by 1940 had three children, all attending school. (Daniel) Phillip was in high school, Hallie was an 8th grader and young Donna, age 9, attended 4th grade. Daniel continued to work until he retired. He and Daisy were living in Sweet Home, Linn County, Oregon when they died. Daniel Lester died on May 30, 1990 and was buried at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. Daisy died June 27, 1995 and interred with her beloved husband at Willamette Memorial Park. May they both find eternal peace in Paradise with their Loved ones.
