Emma Rosella Rice was born Mar 17, 1863 in Lena, Stephanson County, Illinois. Her parents were Daniel Rice and Lucy (Earhart) Rice of Illinois who moved to Atchison, Kansas, where they raised their family. Emma Rosella married her husband, Charles Edwin Ashton, and their union was blessed with seven children. They were Effie Adella, b.1882, Nora Clyde, b.1884, Hazel Kirk, b.1888, John Paul, b.1890, Lucy Pauline, b.1893, Charles Rice, b.1896, and Daniel Lester, b.1898. All of the children were born in different areas of Colorado except Effie and Nora who were born in Kansas. The family went to Colorado and then on to Washington in 1903, where Effie married. Then, Emma, her husband & the remaining children came to Oregon to live by 1910. They liked Oregon so much that they remained here the rest of their lives. They settled in the Tangent area, which is just South of Albany, Linn County, and Charles became a well known farmer in the area for many years, until his health & age forced him to move himself and his wife into town. Charles had severe arthritis and rheumatism that plagued him in the last years of his life, but he lived to be 89 years of age, living until 1943. He was buried at Willamette Memorial Park. Emma lived to be nearly 88 years of age, living in the home Charles had bought them when he had sold their farm, until she passed away on Feb 28th, 1951. She was buried next to her beloved husband at Willamette Memorial Park. Most of their children are buried there also. May they all Rest Peacefully in God's Paradise.
