Rites for Winston K. Larson, 59, principal of Jackson Elementary School, were conducted today in the Eighth Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with burial in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Larson, of 6336 S. 15th Ave., was born in Thatcher and graduated from Thatcher High School in 1929 and from Eastern Arizona Junior College in 1931. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Arizona State University in 1933 and master's degree from ASU in 1958. He worked seven years for Standard Stations Inc. before becoming a teacher. He died Saturday in St. Joseph's Hospital.
He began his teaching career in 1942 at Wilson School in Phoenix. He left the next year to teach science at Monroe School and remained there until 1952, when he was appointed assistant principal and eighth grade teacher at Kenilworth School. He was appointed principal at Jackson School in 1960.
Mr. Larson was a member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, the National Education Association, the Arizona School Administrators Association and the Phoenix Elementary Classroom Association. He served on Selective Service Board No. 9 and was affiliated with Vista Club,the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline; three daughters, Mrs. Arnold Anderson of Glendale, Mrs. Hugo Escobar of Visalia, Calif., and Mrs. Charles Fryer of Phoenix; a son, Kris of Phoenix; a sister, Mrs. Elma Graves of Thatcher; four brothers, Ernest and George, both of Globe, Lorenzo of Yuma and Stanley of Thatcher; and nine grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions to Phoenix Elementary Classroom Teachers Association or the Vista Club scholarship fund.
