Zillah Florene Fraze was born July 28, 1919 in Dickens County, TX to the home of Bertha (Zinn) and E. M. "Mac" Ragland, and heaven gained a sweet angel Sunday night, Sept. 7, 2014. When Zillah, or "Granny," as she was known to all of her family and many others, arrived in heaven, she was greeted by her husband, Ralph, her son, Gene, her son-in-law, Jerry, her grandson, Danny and her daughter-in-law, Sharen. When Zillah was a young girl, the Ragland family moved to a farm near Dora. In 1928, she met Ralph Fraze at church, but they didn't have their first date until 1934. Zillah often joked that she fell in love with him for his black Chevrolet with red wheels. They got married November 28, 1935 at the Methodist Church parsonage in Portales with Bro. W. A. York performing the ceremony. Everyone said she was too young, and that he was too old for her, but it seemed to work, because they were married almost 63 years before Ralph died. Her mother told him she was all his, and if he didn't raise up to suit himself, it was his own fault. They lived in a two room house that measured twelve by twenty-four, 8 miles east of Dora. In 1937, they bought what was to be their "home place" two miles east and one mile north of Dora. In 1938, they built a house there and moved in. That house is still occupied today. In 1978, they retired and moved east of Portales, and in1984 they moved into town. When Zillah was 62 years old, she and her friend, Volita Killgore, began taking painting lessons from Nelda Wallace. One of the pictures she painted was of their original two room home, that she did from memory. Through the years, she had given a painting to each family member as well as many friends. In addition to her painting, she did a lot of knitting, crocheting and quilting. She had made throws for each of her children, and a quilt for each grandchild. Jesus was always the center of Zillah's life. Zillah not only talked the talk, but she walked the walk. Everyone who knew her could see Jesus in her. She and her sister, Anna, often sang special music for services. Although she could read music, she played the piano by ear, and played for many years at the Dora Baptist Church. After they moved to town, she was still asked many times to play for funerals and such, and continued to do that well into her 80's. Even after that, she enjoyed playing at home for her own entertainment. As her son stated it, "She could really paw the ivory." Zillah and Ralph also played the guitar. Zillah was always there to help with the farm and ranch work, but some how found time to keep an immaculate house, and produce big meals at a moment's notice. For years, she taught the young married Sunday School Class in Dora, and often had them all at their house in the evening. By the time she went to bed, you couldn't tell there had been company there. They almost always had company for Sunday dinner too. Even though the house was always clean and orderly, it was never stiff and formal, so that everyone felt comfortable and welcome. After they moved to Portales, Zillah was active in the Emmanuel Baptist Church for as long as her health permitted. Since 2010, she had been living at Heartland Continuing Care Center.
She is survived by a son, Max Fraze, a daughter, Wilma Buzard and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Fraze, along with her "adopted daughter," Jo Rackler all of Portales; 7 grandchildren and spouses, Sherry and Brent Corbin, Lance Fraze, Gary Fraze, Lyle and Aundra Fraze, Scott and Selina Buzard, Wade and Julie Fraze and Wesley and Wende Fraze; 16great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Zillah was the last surviving member of not only her family, but also Ralph's.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Herbert Ragland, three sisters, Fern Moore, Anna Vardeman and Blanche Wilson, a son-in-law, Jerry Buzard, a daughter-in-law, Sharen Fraze, a grandson, Danny Buzard, a son, Gene Fraze, and by her beloved husband, Ralph, who died June 22, 1998.
