Marie Zimmerman Bell, 84, of Holton, passed away at home on March 24, 2006. She was born on October 6, 1921 at Lantry, South Dakota, the daughter of Ward and Nettie Zimmerman. She was educated in South Dakota public schools. She graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines in 1943 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Donagene worked in support of the atomic program in Oak Ridge, TN and Boulder City, NV. She worked as a chemist for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment from 1968 to 1992. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Alvin Bell Sr., in August of 2005. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Zimmerman, in 1999. Survivors include her children Joan Barriere, of Topeka; Alvin Bell, Jr., Soldier; Jeff Bell, Topeka; Karl Bell, Bossier City, LA; Kathy Hurla, Topeka; and Frank Bell, Topeka, 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Ward Zimmerman, Seattle, WA; Robert Zimmerman, Sao Carlos, Brazil; and Hazel Zimmerman, Carlisle, IA. Donagene enjoyed bird watching, especially the sand hill cranes in Nebraska, gardening, antiques, and winning at cribbage. A memorial fund has been set up at the Denison State Bank, 421 New York Ave., Holton, KS 66436, for Donagene M. Bell. This fund will be sent to the Audubon Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon, NE for preservation of the habitat for sand hill cranes. Private services will be held at a later date.
