My Great Grandfather "Hans Anderson" (1822 - 1917)
How he earned his way to Zion:
Hans Anderson was born in the little town of Hansted, Aarhus, Denmark in the year of 1822, he was married in or near the year 1842 or at the age of twenty. His wife's name was Dorthea Nielsen of Underup, Aarhus, Denmark. She was born in 1815 and died in the year 1893. They had four children, two boys and two girls.
In the year of 1861, a war was in progress between Denmark and Germany. All Denmarks' youth was called to the front. A wealthy man, in fear of his son's safety, offered a sum of money to anyone willing to take his place in battle. My great-grandfather, then a married man, and forty years of age, was anxious to come to America and Zion. Because of his age he was exempt from war duty, but was able to take the rich boy's place.
Soon after the war he left for Zion and arrived in Utah by ox-team in the year 1863. He later made two trips via ox-team back to Council Buffs for a man by the name Smoot of Provo, Utah.
A few years later his wife, two daughter and son came to Utah via train. They made their home in Provo, Utah. Hans Anderson lived a full and respectable life and died at the ripe, old, age of niney-five years. Hans Anderson is now resting in the Provo City Cemetery, Provo, Utah
