In his WEST HIGH SCHOOL yearbook is the statement: "'Buster's the man who likes to dream, His ambition is to be a pilot it seems; In the field of radio and planes, He is sure to make a name." Ed obtained mechanical and electrical experience while working after school for his uncle, Joe Schoeffel, shingling houses and learning about the construction trade in order to help his family financially. Drafted into the Army in 1942, Ed was assigned to build remote-controlled flying drones that were used for target practice for the troops. When he was discharged from the Army after the War, Ed obtained several technical trade school certificates using the GI Bill and continued to pursue work in the Cleveland area.
Ed Abel, Jr. held many patents. While working as a co-designer for Vincent G. Marotta, Sr. and Samuel Glazer of the North American Systems (NAS), Ed patented the heating element for the Mr. Coffee machine. Sadly, Ed signed over his commission rights to NAS about 1972 when the company began production of the coffeemaker and received NO monetary award or royalties for his innovation, save for his weekly salary at the company.
Edmund Abel, Jr. attributed his long life to a natural diet that was consistently bolstered by grapefruit seed extract. Being more than a tad bitter that he never received monetary accolades for his invention, he never drank coffee... Uncle Ed was ONE OF A KIND.
