Funeral services for Buford James Bruce, 83, of West Monroe, Louisiana were held at 2:30 PM Monday, May 18, 2009 at Mulhearn Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Stafford officiating. Burial followed at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
He was called Bruce by members of the family; BJ by friends and co-workers. He was born July 6, 1925 in Jackson Parish and passed away at home on Friday, May 15, 2009 after a lengthy illness. He served in the Navy in WWII and was stationed two years in North Africa. After the war, he attended Northwestern State University, where he earned a degree in business. Most of his employment years were with Manville, where he was the Office Services Manager. He retired in 1987.
He was married until his death to my cousin, Betty Davis Bruce, daughter of my aunt, Ina Belle Stallings Davis.
Bruce was a member of First United Methodist Church for sixty years. He served as board chairman two times during that time. He was a member of the Anna Gray Noe Sunday School Class serving several times as teacher and as class president. He was also a member of the local VFW.
Bruce enjoyed his family, friends, church, as well as reading and traveling. Some of his most cherished time was spent with his coffee group that meets every week day at ULM. They call themselves the U.L.M. Mafia and claim to handle the world's issues on a daily basis.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Clemons Andrew Bruce and Ira Amanda Goasha Bruce and his brother, Reggie Bruce.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Betty Davis Bruce, his daughter, Kerry Bruce King-Tranum and husband Bill, his son, Harry Andrew Bruce, two great grandsons, Andrew Minor King and James Nathanael King, one great granddaughter, Bailey Renee Bruce, four step-grandchildren, Gabriel Earl Tranum, Tiffany Tranum Essary and husband Jeremy, Jacob Lowery Tranum, and William Joseph Tranum and four step-great grandchildren, Olivia Jane Essary, Gabriel Tyler Essary, Savannah Grace Essary, and Ruth Anne Essary.
Pallbearers were Charlie Dantzler, Mike Dolecheck, Eros Ginn, Bob Kelly, Andy King, James King, Charles Smith, and Everette Zeagler.
Honorary pallbearers were W.A. Walker, Charlie Page, Earnest St John, and Tom Day.
Visitation was from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM Monday, May 18, 2009 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
The family would like to give special thanks to the workers of United Home Care and Louisiana Hospice of Monroe. Their loving care will never be forgotten.

Many thanks to JR for the transferal of Bruce's memorial to me.
