James "Jim" Henry Carney was born the son of Jessie William and Hannah Patton Sater Carney. James was a farmer and employed by Owen Flower Shop and Ralph Ward Greenhouse in Lawrence, KS.

James married Stella Marie Mayhew 17 Jul 1905 in Lawrence, Douglas, KS. Stella died in 1912 leaving him with three children under the age of four to raise. In June 1917, James asked on his WWI Registration Card to be excused from service as he was single and had to support/raise his children. He did not have to serve.

His 2nd marriage was to Stella's younger sister, Minnie Myrtle Mayhew Johnson. She had four boys by Clarence Pearl Johnson and was divorced. Together, James and Minnie raised the seven children.
