Maureen was born and grew up in the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. She was very close to her mother, Blanche, and as soon as she was old enough helped with the cooking and housekeeping. Blanche taught her all about running a two family house, keeping records, setting up a budget and the value of being thrifty. When she grew up Maureen became an avid coupon clipper and bargain shopper.
After graduating high school, she worked as a Clerk-Typist for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City.
Maureen met Alexander Malinowski, her future husband, one afternoon when she went to visit her father who worked at the offices of Fleming Jaffe in New York City. Alexander worked as an elevator operator in the building. This event happened in the mid-1950s.
Although Maureen and Alex had no children they were Godparents to several children of Maureen's brothers.
Maureen and Alex saved their money for many years and took a dream cruise and tour of Italy in the mid-1960s. They also were actively involved in the yearly Bazaar and Weekly Bingo nights at St. Bernadette's Shrine Church in Brooklyn.
After Alex passed away in 1978 Maureen lived a quiet life. She remained a good sister, Aunt and Godmother. She also was a loyal and constant companion to her mother.
Maureen went to live in Arizona in the early-mid 1990s when she and her mother were no longer well enough to care for themselves. Her brother Alfred took over their care.
She passed away from complications caused by Diabetes in Pima County, Arizona three months before her mother, Blanche, passed away.
Memorial Manager's Note: Maureen Torregrossa Malinowski was my Aunt and Godmother. When she passed on in 1995 my late father, Frank Jesse, told me that her body had been cremated .and the ashes given to his brother Alfred. The cremains were, he told me, sent to New York along with her mother's remains for burial in the same plot with Alfonso, Maureen's father and Blanche's husband.
On 10/16/2012 I called St. Charles Cemetery where Blanche and Alfonso are interred. I was told that they do not have any record of Maureen's cremains.
I received a call from my first cousin Ms. Jacqueline Torregrossa Devery (daughter of Pat and Alfred Anthony Torregrossa) on 3/23/2012 in which we discussed the disposition of Maureen's cremains. Jackie informed me that my Dad was given the ashes and took care of adding them to Blanche and Al's gravesite. Although St. Charles does not have a formal record of the ashes being buried they were most likely scattered on the gravesite. Therefore, the status has been updated to "ashes scattered".
