Noel Mon Ami, like his companions Jade Joy and Ming Toy, was a Belmont Bird. He came to live with his caretaker, Emily Leatrice in 1983. Emily enjoyed her trips up to Rockefeller Center once a month where she visited the Belmont Bird and Kennel Shop to buy her "best buddies" as she called her birds, their food, toys and treats.
Mrs. Belmont and her son Robert said that Noel was a very special cockatiel, gentle and well mannered. This was exactly the kind of bird Emily loved and she took over Noel's care after he bonded with her rather than her daughter.
Noel was very adaptable and went through the ups and downs of Emily's busy household very well. He loved to look at all the bright toys in his cage but never played with them. Instead, he liked to whistle very loud so he could come out of the cage. Noel would then strut over to Emily's make-up mirror and proceed to whistle away and then strut over to Emily and climb up her arm.
Noel was a very picky eater and sometimes the vet said he was too skinny. Emily would always put aside some of the corn or bran muffins her daughter baked and give them to Noel as a treat. Despite being thin he was never seriously ill.
In late 2006 Noel developed an arthritic hip and was no longer able to perch in his cage. He began to have seizures in 2007 and passed on the morning of May 27, 2007. Emily said that now that her last bird had gone to rest, she was also ready to stop fighting the illness that had consumed her for so many years. In August of 2007 she was admitted as a patient to a residence where she lived until her passing in 2011. Noel's ashes were added to the urn with Emily's ashes and now they are at rest together.
