The body of Pvt. William F. Altemus, former South Side resident who was killed in action July 27, 1944 in France, arrived in Easton today. Pvt. Altemus was brought from LaCornbe Cemetery , France to the United States aboard the Army transport Eric Gibson, the fifth funeral ship to return to American war dead and the third to arrive from Europe.
Pvt. Altemus, known to his friends as "Scoop" entered the Army May 6, 1943, and was asssigned to the Infantry. He received training at Camp Croft SC and at Fort Meade MD before going overseas. He was 38 when he died.
He was once employed as head porter at Hotel Easton and was well known as a member of the South Presbyterian Church quoit team. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George S. Altemus and a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Reformed Church, South Side.
