Dorothy A. Callahan of Bandera, TX, passed away on March 18, 2016 in Bandera. She was born in San Antonio to Thomas J. and Elenora Snaer Anderwald on October 14, 1918. As an infant, she was baptized into the Catholic faith at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, Tx. Her family moved to Pipe Creek, then to Bandera where she spent the rest of her life.

Dorothy married Calvin O. Callahan on February 8, 1944 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera, TX and was an active member of that church until her death.

Dorothy attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Bandera and graduated from Bandera High School in 1937. She attended Incarnate Word College and graduated with a teacher’s certificate in 1939. Afterward, she taught in a country school in Mentz, TX. After her marriage, she was primarily a stay-at-home Mom but also taught at St. Joseph’s School in Bandera. Later she worked as at teacher’s aid in the Bandera Independent School District where she touched many students’ lives. In the years following retirement she stayed busy as a curator at the Frontier Times Museum (a job she thoroughly enjoyed), a volunteer at Silver Sage Corral, a curator of the St. Stanislaus Church Museum, and a member of a ladies’ group who donated many hours of prayer service to the residents of Purple Hills Nursing Home (now Cedar Creek). One of Dorothy’s favorite hobbies was crocheting. She was so skilled with the smaller cotton thread and crochet hooks that she made countless doll clothes and her specialty – angels of all sizes. She blessed many with her gift of a crocheted angel.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her dear husband, Calvin O. Callahan; daughter, Ethel Callahan; parents, Thomas and Elenora Anderwald; her infant brothers, Thomas and Anthony; brothers; Lt. Thomas Anderwald, James Anderwald, Vincent Anderwald, and Gerard Anderwald; sister, Mary E. Campion, and great-grandaughter, Emily Brown.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Tom Callahan of Bandera; daughters, Patty (Rodney) Adamson, Bernadette (Artie) Erfurt of Bandera; Beth (Robert) Brown of Premont, TX; four sisters, Bernadette Anderwald, Louise Koehler, Vera King, and Joan Walters ; 15 grandchildren, Michelle Barnet, Charmaine Wise, Mark Adamson, Sharon Sandidge, Tommy Callahan, Weston Callahan, Nicole Roesler, R. C. Brown, Coke Brown, Houston Brown, Rebekah Corona, Ruth Bock, Cindy Brown, Sara D’Spain, and Lauryn Moore; 29 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 pm with rosary at 7 pm on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Grimes Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 am Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Private interment will follow.

Memorials may be given to the Altar Society of St. Stanislaus Church or to the Meals on Wheels Program of Bandera. The family of Dorothy Callahan wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of Cedar Creek Nursing Home and the staff of Sid Peterson Hospice Service who were such a blessing to our mother and us.
