Nine deaths boost state traffic toll

Nine deaths Thursday and early today raised Indiana's 1970 traffic fatality toll to at least 525 compared with 568 a year ago, with the Memorial Day holiday weekend likely to produce twice that many more.

Robert Alexander, 23, and Franklin D. Dancer, 32, Borden, were killed about 2 a.m. today in Pekin, a Washington County town near Salem, when their car crashed into the concrete porch of a house while racing with another auto at more than 100 miles per hour.

The other car, driven by Johnnie Saylor, Salem, also struck the house, the home of an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Lewis. Saylor was hospitalized at Salem. The Lewis's were not hurt although the cars came within five feet of their bed, according to Sheriff Clyde Nichols.

Frederic E. Jorden, 54, Muncie, was killed at about 3 a.m. when his car left U.S. 35, about four miles south of Muncie and hit a utility pole. He was dead on arrival at a Muncie hospital. Deputy Sheriff Douglas Stone of Delaware County said Jorden apparently dozed at the wheel.

Donald England, 18, North Manchester, was killed and two other young men injured shortly before 3 a.m. when a car driven by James S. Roe, 23, Logansport, missed a curve at high speed on Indiana 25, nine miles north of Logansport and skidded into a guard rail. The three had just completed training at Fort Knox, Ky., and were enroute home at the time.

Donald D. Forst Jr., 25, Huntertown, was killed in Noble County near Laotto on Indiana 3 early today when his car struck the end of a bridge over Black Creek and plunged into the water.

Indianapolis Police Sgt. Norman Collins, 41, was killed shortly before 2 a.m. when a car driven by John W. Lucas Jr., 39, Indianapolis, struck him as he stood in Interstate 465 on the west side of Indianapolis waiting for help after his car got stuck in a median crossover.

Mrs. Ova N. Devine, 38, Charlestown, and her 14-month-old grandson, Tommy Joe Devine, Charlestown, were injured fatally Thursday in the collision of their car and a freight train at Charleston. Mrs. Devine was killed outright and the boy died a short time later in a hospital.

Marvin R. Thomas, 18, Rockville, was killed Thursday when his car collided with a school bus on Indiana 47 at Browns Valley in Montgomery County.
