Mr. Robert Charles Fitzsimmons Jr. of Lakeland had drive and determination, said his wife, Hilda Fitzsimmons. "He started as a private in the military and worked his way up to a major," she said. "When he was a police officer, he worked his way up to police chief. No matter what he did, he did his best." Mr. Fitzsimmons died Tuesday (may 6, 1997) at his home. He was 75. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, on Jan. 19, 1922, he moved to Lakeland 14 years ago. H ewas a retired police chief, having worked in Niagara Falls. he was an Army veteran, serving in World War II in the 2nd Ranger Battalion in the European Theater. He received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the FBI Academy. He belonged to the First Christian Church. "He was a good husband, father and grandfathe," said his wife. "We celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary this year. We have had a good life together." He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth McGarvey and Patricia Cianchetti; and brother, James Fitzsimmons. Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Bruce W. Fitzsimmons, Lakeland, and William C. Fitzsimmons, Niagara Falls; daughters, Burdette L. Mayor, Orlando, and Barbara J. Jaconelli,, Canada; brothers, Bernard Fitzsimmons, Pendletonn, NY and William Fitzsimmons, Niagara Falls; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon at Heath Funeral Chapel, 328 Ingraham Ave., Lakeland. Services will be in Niagara Falls at a later date.
