They then migrated to Hancock Co., IL and eventually settled in Lee Co, IA, near the Van Buren Co. line. James served in the 151 st Illinois Infantry for one year. He died 30 Sep 1897 and is buried in Butler Cemetery, Harrison Twp, Lee, IA. James and Amanda had 12 children, Josiah Franklin, Charles Henry, Stella A., Luella Jane, Mary Ann, James William, Ida Malinda, Amanda Louisa, Emma Maggie, John Everett, Luther Orville, one unknown. The first three children were born in Ohio; the next four in Illinois; the remainder in Iowa.

"James A. Davis died at his home, three and one-half miles east of Farmington, Sept. 30. The deceased was born in Virginia, Aug. 11, 1822. He has been living in Lee county for twenty-six years. He was married March 22, 1855. To their union was born twelve children, six of whom with his wife survive him. He was a member of the 151st Illinois infantry, in which he served one year..."
