Barbara was most likely born in Fayette County, Ohio. Her biological parents appear to have been Thomas and Jane (Cunningham) Daugherty. Jane died when Barbara was 2 years old and Thomas was an older man; he most likely couldn't care for Barbara and she went to live with his neighbors David and Rachel (Parrott) Fansher/Fancher. David's Will out of Jefferson County, Iowa, list Barbara as his adopted daughter. Barbara married William Squire Gilmer, the son of William Gilmer and Nancy Squier, on November 7, 1844, Fayette County, Ohio. They had eight children: Amanda A. (known as Mianda), William McKendre, David Leander, Charles Adam, Joseph Fansher, Nancy Jane, John Alphens and Nathaniel Squire Gilmer. William died the same day their 8th child, Nathaniel Squire Gilmer, was born. Family legend states William died of pneumonia due to being out in a snow or rain storm. Barbara never remarried. She died at the age of 64 from Consumption (Tuberculosis).
I feel it should be noted that given Barbara, her daughter Nancy Jane and son-in-law, James Stewart, are all buried in this cemetery, it is most likely that her husband, William Squire Gilmer, and her sons William, Joseph and John Gilmer are also buried in this cemetery in unmarked graves.
