ARCHIE WILEY GARTIN

Archie Gartin was born November 20, 1910 in Lucas County, Iowa to John and Rosa (Lynch) Gartin. He was the youngest of nine children. Archie passed away on February 28, 2008, in Fresno, California, after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and the love of his life, Beulah (Burley) Gartin who passed away in 1945, and his second wife, Hazel LaDonna (Olds) Gartin, who went to be with the Lord in December of 1993. Five brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.

Archie grew up on a farm in Iowa with his father, mother, brothers and sisters. His mother passed away when Archie was 6 years old. He was raised by his sisters and brothers. Archie was a veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was always extremely proud of his military record.

He returned to Iowa for a short time after being discharged from the Navy, then journeyed to California, ending up in Whittier. He worked at various, then in the fall of 1946 he went to work for Associated Tidewater Oil Company, which later became Getty Oil Company. He started as a painter, working his way up to a drilling crew, finally becoming a "pumper", a position he held until his retirement in 1975. Archie always had good things to say about Getty Oil Company.

In 1961 Archie was transferred to Bakersfield where he and Hazel purchased their little home on Berger St., where he lived until 2003, when it was necessary that he move to Fresno. After his retirement, Archie was very active in his church, and was proud to say he helped construct the "Living Christmas Tree". He also enjoyed doing volunteer work such as transporting children and adults with cancer to their treatments. Being with children was very special to him. As Hazel's health continued to decline, it was necessary to give up his volunteer work, and he devoted himself wholly to taking care of Hazel until her death in December of 1993.

Archie is survived by many nephews and nieces in California, Iowa and Wyoming, a step-daughter and two step-grandchildren, as well as many good neighbors and friends in Bakersfield, California. Archie had a wonderful outlook on life, and a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed but has left behind many treasured memories.

A memorial service will be held in Chariton, Iowa at a later date.
