St. Helena Artist Dies In San Francisco

John Wagner Alcorn, who operated a liturgical artist studio in St. Helena for many years, died Sunday in San Francisco of pneumonia, following an attack of influenza, the STAR [newspaper] has been informed. He was 71.

Mr. Alcorn is survived by his wife, Mary Dona Alcorn, and a brother, Homer, of Daly City.

Beyond the stark statistics, St. Helenans will remember a colorful, kind man, who went out of his way to befriend the lonely and friendless. His home at 1778 Main Street [St. Helena, Napa County, CA], with its cathedral-like facade, was the scene of many gatherings of an international character, particularly for people from Latin America. Mrs. Alcorn is a member of the ruling elite of Nicaraugua [?], and a brother-in-law is a revered Central American poet. Mrs. Alcorn's father was mayor of Managua.

A native of St. Louis, Mr. Alcorn came to the Bay Area in 1928, after living in Southern California for some years. He established himself, as a religious artist, with a studio on Sutter Street. He later moved to St. Helena [Napa County, CA], with the house at 1778 Main and for a time had a studio, in the Masonic Temple building.

He was a member of St. Helena Rotary, a past commander of the American Legion's Zane-Irwin Post, secretary of the Veterans' Political Council, a member of the San Francisco Press Club, and the San Francisco Bible Reading Group.

He served in World War II in the South Pacific as a combat infantryman, where his natural linguistic skill, sharpened by special language training at the University of, Michigan, resulted in assignments to interrogate Japanese prisoners of war. He took part in many of the most harrowing American landings but escaped unscathed. After the war he served in the Armed Forces Intelligence Section in Tokyo.

As a religious artist he received commissions from all over the western world and frequently traveled abroad. He was an authority on the great cathedrals of the world, making their construction come alive. He was also an organist, playing in churches here and in San Francisco.

Some months ago he and his wife sold their home here [St. Helena], and returned to San Francisco to live.
