Ralph Ashford DaMetz was the son of Omer Ashford DaMetz and Margaret Louise Coffin. He was the husband of Reba Marguerite York. He was a teacher, gemologist, rock hound, silver and goldsmith, a collector and repaired old clocks. He was well read and especially loved the classics and loved to collect interesting facts. He moved his family from Kansas to Colorado and then to Oregon and taught at the local high school.

Once, while visiting his daughter, he found a book his granddaughter was reading. He grabbed the book, and found his granddaughter, "Cherie! Have you read this book? It is Les Miserables and about a man named Jean Valjean." In his excitement, he waived the book in the air. "It is the greatest book ever written!"
