Jim was born in Iowa and moved to San Diego, California where he lived for the remainder of his life. He married Carol Elizabeth DaMetz Sommers in 1979 and was father to her two children and grandfather to their 17 little ones. He started as an accountant and became the business manager of the San Diego Union and Evening Tribune. He enjoyed golf and loved his family.
