Margery Garrett Adcock, 95, died July 4, 2015. Her visitation will be Monday, July 6, 2015, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, from 6 pm until 8 pm. Her funeral service will be Tuesday, July 7th at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ernie Emmons officiating. Burial will follow in Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Adcock was born September 27, 1919 in Sheffield. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas C. Garrett and Mary Wyman Garrett; her brother, Lawrence Garrett and his wife Jackie Garrett; his sisters, Ruth G. Henson and her husband J.N. Henson, Katherine Gessling and her husband Irvin Gessling, and Beatrice G. Pertain and her husband MSG George Pertain; nephews COL George Pertain and J.N. (Bill) Henson, Jr.; her husband of 43 years, Gordon E. Adcock; and her beloved cat, Sophie, who was 20 years old, and Ladye, who was a “good cat”, age unknown, who found her true home at last.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Emmons McDonald-Love, and her husband Howard (Sonny) Love; son, Ernest J. (Ernie) Emmons, and his wife Marcia Giles Emmons; Step Daughter, Linda Adcock Slayton, and her husband Bobby Slayton; niece and nephew, Mary Pertain Shook, and her husband T.C. Shook; special daughter, Linda Pace, and her husband Howard Pace; grandchildren, Ernest Emmons III (Bunky), and his wife Betsy, John David Emmons (J.D.), and Rachel Emmons Longcrier; great grandchildren, David Emmons, John Thomas Emmons, Abigail Emmons, Lakyn Emmons, and Noah Emmons; plus she was “Nutter Mutter” to several “young folks” Ralph and Ann Coleman, Judy Andrews, Bettye Jones, and the late Brenda Ginn Willingham.

Marge began her nursing career in 1949 at what was called the Old Colbert County Hospital, now known as Helen Keller Hospital. She later worked for Dr. Bracken, of Tuscumbia, all the while continuing her duties with the Order of the Eastern Star. Her best known employer was Dr. Dowlen Dorsey Cox, better known as Dr. DD. He was the doctor for the Sheffield High School football team, and they were Mom’s boys. There would be no arguing over shots, treatments, etc. and they had best not give her any static. She was there until Dr. DD passed away – a sad time for all of us. He was not only her employer, but a friend and advisor to her entire family and much beloved. Marge finished her working life for Dr. Howard Johnson for 12 years. She first spent her retirement camping with Colbert County Chief Camping Club and then traveled with her sisters to five European Countries, then the traveling bug hit.

She and her daughter Ruth began traveling first alone (her husband pronounced both of us “crazy”). Then we discovered tour groups and managed to cover the entire U.S.A. with the exception of Vermont and Hawaii, and also every province of Canada, except Labrador. But the one that topped all else was a 30 day bus tour of the wonders of Alaska – Majesty of Alaska.

Her beautiful hobby was her flowers and they were a wonder to behold, even earning her a citation for “Yard of the Month”. She was out potting plants with her daughter in law, Marcia, the day she became ill.
