Donald D Thorne enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. in Jan. 1945. He served his country as a Marine for 20 years. As a sergeant in the Korean War, he led his platoon up Heartbreak Ridge. Don was a member of the Marine Gold Team and at one time held both the world rifle and pistol records. He was a rifle instructor at both the old Camp Mathews in San Diego, CA and at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA. He was married to Virginia Gordon Baxter in July, 1952 and had two children: William Donald Thorne born May 1955 at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Washington; and Helen Gordon Thorne born in Louisville, Georgia in August, 1956. Don's second wife was Donna Mae Chapell. They married in 1968 and divorced in 1976. Don lived at his uncle Dan Thorne's ranch in Atascadero, CA from the early 1990's until his death. He remained, always, a Marine - Semper Fi, Don.
