Jim was the youngest child of Albert Marson Brinkley, Sr. and Mattie Dru (nee Dingler) Brinkley.

Jim's two brothers were Travis Ray Brinkley and Albert Marson Brinkley, Jr.

Jim's three sisters were Florence Brinkley Jean, Opal Brinkley Moore and Billie Brinkley.

Jim married Leann Cobb Capps in the 1950s and adopted her two children, Gene Wesley and Kimberley. Jim and Lee Ann also had a child together, Patrick Dixon Brinkley. The children from this marriage were raised by their mother and grandmother, Alma Cobb.

Jim remarried 4 DEC 1971, Hazel Dean Pounders, nee Presley, and adopted her two children, Tommy and Suzanne, three years later, in 1974, just before leaving the country for Venezuela to drill. Although adopted, Hazel's two children were raised by their grandparents, Eack and Ethel Presley, until their adult age.

During his life, Jim worked in the oil industry starting out as a roughneck, floor hand, driller and working his way up to an independent Drilling Consultant, with his own company Brinkley Services, Inc. He lived in Africa and South America, drilling in the Canary Islands, Nigeria, and Venezuela. He stated that one of his rigs in Africa was in head hunter country and they had mounted gunners on all four corners of the rig. He had great photos and loved to share them to anyone who was interested. He also owned a big rig truck and trailer which he drove cross country for a while before returning to the oil industry.

Jim loved ice cream and could grill up a mean steak.

Jim was preceded in death by Patrick "Pat", his only biological child, in 1998. See the memorial for Patrick Dixon Brinkley. Jim is survived by Hazel, Gene, Kim, Tommy, Suzanne and all grandchildren.

Jim had three grandchildren by son, Pat, and his wife, Kim (nee Brown) Brinkley; Heather, Shelby and Riley.

Jim had one step-granddaughter by Tommy and Evelyn (nee Gutierrez) Brinkley; Sarah Michelle.

Jim had step-grandchildren by his stepson, Gene Wesley Brinkley, and stepdaughter, Kim Brinkley Rodriguez.

Jim passed away after a lengthy struggle with CLL cancer. He was treated at MD Anderson in Houston, TX and passed at Kindred Hospital, also in Houston, TX. Hazel kept him alive as long as she could. The doctors descended upon his step-daughter, Suzanne, on her lunch break the day before Jim died to get her assistance to try to explain to Hazel that it was time to let him go. Hazel would not accept this option until this meeting. We convinced Hazel to release all life saving treatments and connections and he passed within 24 hours.

A memorial service was held at Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer Street, Brenham, Texas on 12 MAR 2006. Jim had resided in Brenham, TX, with Hazel from 2003 until 2006, after moving from Finley, TN. Jim and Hazel moved from TN to seek better and further treatment at M.D. Anderson, as all means had been exhausted in the Memphis, TN area.

The headstone is for Jim and acts as a cenotaph for Hazel, as she is living.
