Mr. Abeler was one of the first to die as a member of the 106th Infantry Regiment, which was based at the armory at Bedford and Atlantic Avenues in Brooklyn. Abeler served overseas from May 10 to September 27, 1918. He was killed in action in Belgium, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
