He held several public offices, including Jackson County Treasurer, and was Deputy Surveyor in the Kansas City office of the United States Bureau of Customs at the time of his death in 1903 (suicide by gunshot). Married to Margaret Gates, together they had a daughter named Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, that most people know as Bess Truman, wife of Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States. Although his wife Margaret is buried in this same cemetery, she is buried in the Gates family plot along with her parents, and David Wallace is buried in the Wallace family plot. The two are at opposite ends of different sections of the cemetery.
