Kenneth Spencer was a third generation coal-mine owner and operator in the Pittsburg, Kansas area. Also formed the Spencer Chemical Company. Gulf Oil bought him out in the early 1950's. Kenneth Spencer and his wife Helen were philanthropists, among other gifts was the Spencer Theatre in the Performing Arts Center at University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC). Kenneth Spencer left an estate of approximately $15 million when he died. His wife continued her generousity after his death.
