Barbara Mullings Carter died in her home on Harbor Island, South Carolina in the early hours of January 28, 2014. Mrs. Carter was born on August 6, 1934, in New Rochelle, New York, one of two children of the late Carrie Louise Tucker and the late Sivan Ruben Mullings. Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Hunter College of the City of New York and earned a bachelors degree in History and a masters of science degree in education of the gifted and talented from The College of New Rochelle. From 1973 to 1991 she worked for The City School District of New Rochelle and was lead teacher in open classroom, teacher of gifted and talented students and math coordinator. She also served as university instructor and mentor in pedagogic courses at The College of New Rochelle. Barbara Mullings Carter was a life-long lover of history. In 1991, reversing the migration of her ancestors, Barbara left New Rochelle to live on Harbor Island. Beaufort's rich history immediately became Barbara's passion particularly when it pertains to slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction. Her burgeoning personal library of low country history books attests to that. Her other professional accomplishments include writer for 4 volumes of THE SUPER SOURCE an 18-volume math resource for teachers published by Cuisenaire Company of America, writer of resource material for Gullah and Geechee-Mahn tours St. Helena, SC, writer of tourist brochures published by Delara Communications Group, elected four times as Vice President for Curriculum and Pedagogy Federation of United School Employees Local 280, New Rochelle, NY, co-founder of New Rochelle Children's Shakespeare Festival and coordinator of Reading Discovery Volunteers at Beaufort SC Elementary School. Mrs. Carter was a member of Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society in History, Epsilon Theta Chapter, New York, NY, American Association of University Women, Beaufort, SC Branch, as well as, a lifetime supporter and advocate of the arts. Barbara Mullings Carter is survived by her three children Brian, Carolyn and Christopher Carter, two grandsons Brian M. Carter II and Julian M. Carter as well as, scores of devoted relatives and friends who will hold her in loving memory.
